Kalina Rangers reigns supreme in KFL 2008
As defender Khan changed the face of the game with his timely and final goal!

The solitary goal came from defender Irfan Khan, which was enough to see his side lift the title after a month and a half of intense qualification.

Excluding the winning goal, the match could have been anyone’s, as both sides had their own chances to get ahead. The Rovers clearly missed the services of Abbu Shaikh and the in form Richard Nadar, who scored a brace in their semi final against Oceanics, too seemed to be dormant, especially his runs through the mid-field that created gaps for potential goals.

The first half saw alternate ball possession for either side, where the strikers failed to get through, thanks to a well coordinated defence on either side. The only real chance came to the enterprising Nadar, who showed one instance of his dynamic runs from the half line. But his well-orchestrated shot went just wide of the pole, with the goalkeeper nowhere in sight.

Things didn’t really change in the second, save for the shots on target being more frequent, with both the sides sensing an urgency to get ahead. A cross by Rovers’ Cerick D’Mello saw Larry Kinny’s shot kept out by the Emmanuel Fernandes in the goal. A long ball by Sheldon Jacinto was the only fumble recorded by an otherwise efficient Fernandes, which fell to Savio Rodrigues but was only called foul by the referee.

The Rangers too had their share of chances as Anthony Machado’s long-range effort went just off the right bracket. The Rovers clearly had a bigger support from the crowd. However, a loose ball in the box by Khan put past keeper Sheldon Jacinto was enough to silence the vociferous Rovers’ support, much to the delight of a relatively smaller number of Rangers’ supporters. The Rangers could have further increased the margin but Neil D’Costa’s header from a corner could only reach as far as the bar.
